Essential Skills for a Career in Sports
Over nearly a decade working multiple positions in pro sports, I was fortunate to land dream jobs with the Detroit Red Wings (NHL) and for the Rocket Mortgage Classic (PGA TOUR), helping generate more than $340 million in sponsorship sales.
The #1 question I got asked was "Can you hook up free tickets???"
After that, question #2 was "How can I get a job in sports too???"
Today, I'd like to share some of the critical skills that have been instrumental to my career in sports marketing.
1. Understanding of the Sports Industry
First and foremost, a deep understanding of the sports industry is crucial. This includes familiarity with the major players, the industry's economics, and current trends. My time with the Detroit Red Wings has provided an invaluable foundation. I had the luxury of working for my hometown team, but you should be able to talk intelligently about various players, sports, leagues, and teams and the business structures and revenue models that operate within them when talking with clients and fans.
2. Marketing and Business Acumen
Next should be a layup that most entry-level workers don't realize - the team is hiring you for the job they need to be done by a qualified person. Your fanhood has nothing to do with the hiring process. You need to have a firm grasp of marketing principles and business acumen. You must understand how to leverage sports to help businesses achieve their objectives. This includes everything from creating compelling sponsorship proposals to measuring the effectiveness of marketing campaigns. After my career in sports and now currently working as a Chief Marketing Officer, my experience taught me how to integrate sports marketing strategies with broader business goals.
3. Networking Skills
The sports industry is all about relationships. From securing sponsorship deals to negotiating contracts, networking plays a huge role. Building and maintaining relationships with key stakeholders - clients, partners, or colleagues - is crucial for success. Networking has opened doors and created opportunities I couldn't have imagined throughout my career.
4. Negotiation Skills
Negotiation is a vital skill in the sports industry. Whether securing a sponsorship deal or negotiating a contract, advocating effectively for your position is critical. This requires clear communication, strategic thinking, and a firm grasp of your worth.
5. Adaptability
The sports industry is constantly evolving. New technologies, changing consumer behaviors, and shifting market dynamics mean that you need to be adaptable. You must stay on top of trends and be ready to pivot your strategies as needed. Running my marketing firm, Snag Business has taught me that adaptability is one of the essential qualities a sports marketer can have.
6. Passion for Sports
Finally, a genuine passion for sports goes a long way. It won't be what gets you hired, but it's what builds retention. This is what will get you through the long hours, the challenging projects, and the inevitable setbacks, month after month, season after season. My love for sports has been the driving force behind my career, and it's something I bring to every project and every client.
These are just a few of the skills that have been instrumental to my career in sports marketing. Whether you're just starting or looking to take your career to the next level, I hope these insights can guide your journey. Remember, there's no one "right" path in this industry - it's all about finding what works for you and continually learning and growing along the way.
